BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS & UINTAH AND OURAY INDIAN HEALTH SERVICES: Teams with the Drug Enforcement Administration for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Ft. Duchesne, Utah – On Saturday April 27, 2024 from 10am – 2pm the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Uintah & Ouray Indian Health Services, and the Drug Enforcement Administration will host DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day at locations across the country. DEA and its partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs. This year we will also be collecting vaping devices. For more than a decade, the event has helped Americans easily rid their homes of unneeded medications – those that are old, unwanted, or expired-that too often become a gateway to addiction. Take Back Day offers free and anonymous disposal of unneeded medications at close to 5,000 local drop-off locations nationwide.

What:     National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

When:    Saturday, April 27th from 10am – 2pm.

Who:      Bureau of Indian Affairs and Uintah & Ouray Indian Health Services

Where:   7723 East Small Loop Road Ft. Duchesne, Utah 84026 (Recreation Gym Parking Lot)

In partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back has removed 8,950 tons of medication from circulation since its inception. Collection sites will not accept syringes, sharp and illicit drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup should remain sealed in their original container. The cap must be tightly sealed to prevent leakage. All vaping devices should have the batteries removed prior to disposal. For more information, you may contact Lieutenant Brian Tabbee at (435) 722-2012 Ext. 4202.

Ft. Duchesne, UT, January 24, 2024

The Ute Tribal Business Committee has adopted a Resolution terminating all current Tribal permits for non-Tribal members to hunt, fish, or engage in outdoor recreational activity on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation.  This action, which applies to hunting, fishing, camping, swimming, and any other recreational activity on the Reservation, goes into effect immediately.  The Resolution also sets an indefinite moratorium on the issuance of any new Tribal hunting, fishing, or recreational activity permits to nonmembers of the Tribe.

This Business Committee action is a response to recent events involving nonmember activities on Tribal land that gave rise to serious concerns over the safety of Tribal employees, officers, and members.  The Tribe has taken a hard stand to protect its people from nonmembers who exploit Tribal permits and disregard Tribal rules and regulations in place to protect Tribal communities and natural resources.  “As elected members of the Business Committee, we are duty-bound to take measures necessary to protect the health and safety of our members and our Tribal officers,” said Business Committee Chairman Julius T. Murray, III.  “Nonmember hunting and fishing on our lands is a privilege, not a right.  As long as there are individuals who disrespect Tribal jurisdiction and sovereignty and treat our homeland as a place of lawlessness, then we have no choice but to draw a hard line on all nonmember permits.”

About the Ute Indian Tribe - The Ute Indian Tribe resides on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in northeastern Utah.  Three bands of Utes comprise the Ute Indian Tribe: The Whiteriver Band, the Uncompahgre Band and the Uintah Band.  The Tribe has a membership of more than three thousand individuals, with over half living on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation.  The Ute Indian Tribe operates its own tribal government and oversees approximately 1.3 million acres of trust land which contains significant oil and gas deposits.  The Tribal Business Committee is the governing council of the Tribe.

PUBLIC NOTICE TO TRIBAL MEMBERS: This is a public notice to all members of the Ute Indian Tribe. As many of you are aware, the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles has a history of charging vehicle sales taxes and fees on Tribal Members residing on Indian country lands within Uintah & Ouray Reservation boundaries. These tax and fee assessments are unlawful and outside the jurisdictional reach of the State of Utah. The Business Committee has been actively working to address this issue with the State of Utah. However, the Business Committee has been made aware of recent instances of the Roosevelt and Vernal Branches of the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles continuing this unlawful practice. If you are a Tribal member and you believe you have been unlawfully charged state sales tax or fees in connection with your vehicle, please supply any statements, receipts, or other supporting documentation to Mr. Logan Big Eagle he may be contacted at 303-926-5292 to make arrangements for submission of these material. You may also bring any supporting documentation to the Business Committee Secretary. Thank you for your attention to this notice.
